Do you know that feeling when you go to a pool and walk along the edge because the water is cold? After a few minutes, you still jump in, but guess what? The water hasn’t gotten warmer, your mindset has changed. A similar thing happens before talking to a woman. Whether you talk to her or not, you are physically there. She can either see a weird guy glancing at her from time to time like a predator, or she can see a smiley, happy, friendly guy. Which one looks better?

Just take the first step in approaching a woman, and maybe they will do the same. Who knows? Say "hi" to a woman, then tell your friends you thought you knew her, but you don’t. This will break the monothony of the conversation. If you repeat this 3-4-5 times in a row everything becomes easier for you and your friends will know what you are doing. It will be that moment when they will challange you to say "hi" to another woman... this is what you need. It might sound weird, but once you're with your friends, everything feels much easier.

If you are generally shy, starting off with cold approaching women is probably too much of a step-up. Having been there myself at your age, just throwing yourself in the deep end may lead to things getting awkward and uncomfortable for someone else and to you. Either way, your lack of confidence will turn people off most of the time, regardless of whether everything else goes fine.

Don't put too much pressure on yourself to cold-approach women. You can take baby steps to it. It's really just the skill of talking and ingratiating yourself with strangers (something useful for life in general). So just focus on learning to do that. It doesn't have to be women. If you're uncomfortable, just compliment or strike up a conversation about potential interests with random men. As long as they aren't busy or tired, if you're friendly, most people will be happy, and it'll make their day. If you want to learn to have conversations with strangers, I've found old people to be very accommodating. If you really want to learn to be comfortable flirting with women, try complimenting and having conversations with old women at the park. They likely haven't had that kind of attention for years, and just think of it as you doing a nice thing for someone else.

Don't be a douchebag, never think that talking to a woman as just some kind of burden just to get laid. Learn to enjoy the process of becoming a better conversationalist. You're noticing your friends getting more feminine attention, because like me, you were probably just standing in the corner, not being social or too scared to strike up a conversation. Like all forms of anxiety, you're probably in your head thinking way too much about messing up, and people pick up on that.
