Good job with the observational openers. They're better than both direct and indirect openers.

I've never noticed a significant advantage between different styles of openers, unless you have to smooth things over with her surrounding peer group. Cool idea about leading her to books you like though.

Details, por favor. Personal experiences (field reports), the nuances that you may have noticed. Since this is one area which has been scarcely discussed, every drop of contribution accumulates.

Sure thing.
If I'm picking up at night and I've been hitting a lot of girls up, I tend to get tunnel vision and when I see a girl I want to approach, and go straight in without any attention to my surroundings. One time this cute girl was walking on the street at night and I walk up "Hey, you are absolutely adorable" Sexy eyes, seriously sexual tone. At which point her entire extended family around her start cheering. You'd think you should use an indirect opener in that case, but if you come off as a cool dude people who would like you anyway will be accepting of it.
This may seem unrelated, but when I was taking this stuff seriously for the first time, I used to go out alone so I wouldn't embarass myself in front of my friends. If you tell a girl who likes you "I'm here alone" she will usually say "Wow that's so brave! I could never do that." Rarely it's "Oh yeah I do that too! My friends don't know how but I'm really outgoing". If the girl doesn't like you she'll either straight up say out loud that it's creepy, or she'll get quiet for a moment and you can tell she's thinking it. Sometimes she just won't have any reaction, which usually means you're half-stepping. I've done this well over 500 times.
You may think: "Well sure they'll accept it, but you could probably make a better impression and get further with the girl faster otherwise". I don't think that's very important in the long run. If you can take a girl from being pissed at you, to loving you in a matter of seconds, having a very slightly bad impression and turning it better is practically zero effort. You also get the comfort factor of exploring different emotions, and she's more keenly aware that she likes you because of the shift.
Now the two main exceptions I make to this idea, has little to do with the girl, and everything to do with her peer group. When I approch girls with guy friends, they sometimes get extremely defensive. This is usually when I'm acting kinda weak. One time I was at a country music concert. I walk up, introduce myself, and then start joking that there are palpable racist undertones flowing through the venue. The girls think I'm funny, giggling, one girl looked like bambi, but the guy started raging at me. "Do they know you?" "Fuck you I'm not racist" etc. If I had gone in with a more familiar tone, outright said I was a friend, or was more centered it wouldn't have happened.
A similar thing happens when her friends are around. The average dude is creeping hard when he approaches, the friends are jealous often, or they think their friend will regret it. So if they see you being direct or getting physical early, even if the girl loves you, they'll tend to whisk her away by default.
They're exceptions because it's extremely hard to salvage, I've only been successful with girlfriends but never guy friends.
I haven't done much daygame, but girls are girls, and the daygame I have done was way more forgiving.
