Icebreakers can be anything that can be used as a plausible, low-risk excuse to start a conversation. I personally like to comment on interesting things happening in our vicinity, or better yet, on something interesting a person is doing or has done. Being genuinely interested in the thing I'm discussing makes the rest of the conversation flow more easily, since the person I'm talking to is usually also interested in that thing and both willing and able to speak confidently about it. Ultimately, you'll have to find what works best for you, but feel free to give this a try.

I find when trying to break the ice I go for what they’re interested in. People tend to open up and glow when they talk about something they’re passionate about, weather it’s a hobby, interest, sport, ect. Once you get an idea of what they’re interested in keep asking questions, pitch in and add stories to help you both bond. If they’re guarded mention something you like and you’re excitement will help ease the mood and give them the opportunity to engage with you.
