Hey, what's good? Just wanting to share my experience with my recent cold approach. I've been studying pick up for some time now. I'm by no means a pro, and I come from a small town. Finding randoms can be hard for practice. This is my first real experience since studying with randoms.
Anyways, I play in a band. I arrived at the venue we were playing at. I see a 6 and a 7.5 outside by themselves. I had never seen them before, so I was going for it. I didn't know where any of my friends or bandmates were, so I had a solid opener.
HH: Hey, I don't normally talk to strangers but I was wondering if you all have seen my friend? 6: Haha, what does he look like? HH: (gives description) I really don't know how to describe him though without coming off as racist.. He sticks out in a crowd of people. 6: OHHHH! I know your friend and you really can't describe him without coming off as racist (laughs) I seen him last somewhere outside here. HH: He is so hard to find sometimes, despite really sticking out in a crowd. I really don't know anyone here right now, so I came up to you two. 6: We actually don't know anyone either. HH: Well.. I actually know a few people here, I just pretend to not know some of them. So what are your all's names? You two seem kind of fun. 6: I am 6, and this is 7.5, what about you? HH: Well hi 6 and 7.5, I am HH. I am guessing that you two are also not from around here? 6: (she names off a town about 50-60 miles away) HH: Wow, you all drove that far for this thing looking for fun? 6: Its not that far of a drive. HH: Still, this show isn't worth driving for a hour, but it is something to do I guess.
Now some how, we got got on the concept of where the girls looked like they were from. I don't know remember exactly how the conversation shifted here.
6: We look like we're from Russia don't we? HH: You do, but she (target) doesn't. (At this point 7.5 had somewhat of a shocked offended look on her face) 6: HAHA, yes she does. HH: Is your friend always this quiet? 7.5: Shut up! I just don't know you! 6: She is shy. HH: Shes been so quiet that I have already forgot her name, 6.
At this point, my friends yell at me. I excuse myself from the conversation and go talk to them.
"I will talk to you later 6 and..... I forgot your name again other girl".
We later went and stood down the street. The two girls walked by. I said "Look, its my new friends". They acted like they didn't know me and kept walking. This kind of downplayed me in front of my group of friends, which was no big deal to me, and I played it off when they went by with "Oh, okay". That don't give a shit attitude I displayed basically made my friends say "Those girls are bitches".
Eventually, their group of friends showed up. The guys they were with yelled my name for me to come over. I was acquainted with them from the past. One guy had a problem with me in the past, so I extended my hand and gave him a firm handshake to show him I had no problem with him. We talked and I felt like I directed the conversation. The 7.5 was still super shy, so I continued to focus on the group.
Another group of friends yelled for me, and I left the group once again. I did not spot the girls for the rest of the night in a spot that would enable me to talk to them. Shows are normally super loud and the crowd is typically wreckless. Since I was performing that night, I did not really get the chance to talk to them again. I think I might have been able to number close with the 6, she showed more ioi's. Plus, with what I put out there on the table already, they could have found me later to tell me "hey, you did good" assuming they were interested. Generally girls that do have interest in guys in a band will say that to them some time after they play. It is kind of against the pickup stuff I have learned, but then again my band was the focal point and providing entertainment for 15-20 minutes of the night. I did get approached by other girls after we played.
Some of the problems I can recognize would be: - When I was with my friends and gave them attention. This made me look needy and by them blowing me off it lowered my social value to them and gave them false empowerment. - I don't think I played the band card enough. I'm not usually one to flaunt that though at shows since they can see me performing later. Plus, a good majority of the guys there are also in bands. - By me straight up asking them where my friend was as an opener, it made me kind of look beta and dependent. I really just wanted to break the ice, but looking back it wasn't a smart move. Then again, instead of running off once they said they didn't know, I stood around and talked to them and gathered rapport.
Overall, I'm happy with just going up to randoms and talking. I got over that speed bump. I placed myself out of my comfort zone and added another room to my comfort zone. If you guys can point out anything that I could of done differently, feel free to.
