It's making assumptions like "You look like you're an artist." I'd say it kinda falls under the same category as making statements which is always better than asking questions which can lead to very interview-like conversation.

It's pretty good way to get a girl to open up about what she does whether she is in this particular case an artist or not and get the conversation going.

Watch the show "The Mentalist." It's about a guy who cold reads. Basically these people make smart guesses and the smart guesses open up the door for them to really start to learn about you. Psychics are basically really good cold readers.

I think the most famous guy around is a guy named Darren Brown.
