I'm older, and usually just lurk on here, more than I actually comment.

I have two pieces of advice for you to consider. Ultimately, you are in control of your own life, and it's on you if you want to apply what I say.

First - Treat online dating as a way to experiment, with different approaches, and also to practice talking to girls in general. It will help you in the long run, talking and meeting people in the long run, especially as you get older.

So, even if right now, online dating isn't working for you, just do it in the background, as practice. That's it. Just think of it as practice.

Second - and this is where, I am different than a lot of guys on here, DON'T approach girls, let them approach you. Instead, focus on you, and all the things that make you uniquely different than other guys, in positive ways. Carry yourself with confidence, and girls will approach you, out of curiosity - especially, if you have been practicing your people skills, in the way I mentioned above.

Like I mentioned, I am older, and so maybe that has played a role in my recent success with women, but I can honestly go to any bar tonight, with my own agenda (not trying to get laid), sit down, talk to the bar tenders, talk to the people sitting around me, and just enjoy myself, and I guarantee I will get approached by, and likely go home with one of the better looking girls at the bar.

I get approached, because A.) I focused on aspects of my life, that are interesting, and people around me want to know more about - and B.) I have put in year's of practice, talking to people. I am very comfortable in almost any setting.

If you think its a good Idea, to approach a girl that is attractive, and say hi, or compliment them - then do it. Its just practice. Eventually you'll get good at it.

Every chance you get, especially at your age, practice talking to people...girls are the main goal obviously, but practice talking with all people, in all situations.

You're going to be in a lot of social settings, during the next decade of your life, I think online dating is just another, passive way to practice, while you are also out there - doing, whatever it is, that you do.

Just say hi. What is the worst that can happen. Ask yourself this: you want to keep feeling like shit when you do not approach or do you want to know who the girl is and know if she is someone you can be with?
Also the 'don't approach, girls approach you' is very bad advice in my opinion. I heard it before but that shit never happens because girls are not built to do that sort of thing. It is a very easy getaway gate for people not to approach and satisfy themselves by using such a toxic excuse.

I'm a guy who will approach girls in any given situation. Honestly it's helped it get my social skills up. you learn what works and what doesn't this way. A very simple way is to ask a question, like you suggested. If you see a girl you like try approaching her and then you can decide if that's what you want to do.

Most women do not want to randomly be approached on the street by someone they do not know. Context also really matters here. If its someone you have seen around or is in a safe environment e.g. workplace, school fair enough, but out on the street your chances of success are very slim and you may come across as off putting. Parties, clubs, bars, etc provide the optimal social setting to talk to women you don't know.
