Sounds to me You really like her and therefore have expectations. If You dont try you will regret it. How I would approach this, if someone disagrees feel free to correct me.

Go ahead, and say something along the lines that You like to spend time with her and that You would like to take her out on a date. If shes interested she will accept, if not she will throw some things like "I can't i have homework" "My cats brothers neighbour has a cold" etc.

If she tells You shes not ready for anything . That also means no. In that case I personally would detach and not spend much time with her and focus on some other girl.

Now when I was in a similar situation I didnt want other girls and I was focused only on this one. But quickly I realized there is plenty of good women, and You shouldnt suffer for someone that doesnt care.

Don't push your luck. Be a mutual friend and try to have fun.

If that means asking her out, just to have fun and not be remotely serious about it, then you might have a foot in the door when she's over her problem.

With some grown up perspective and encouragement, I'd rather be focused more on my future. What we characterize as relationships at this age shouldn't weigh on our thoughts as much as they did. No one is sharing finances and no one lives together.

I don't know what age group you are now, but I remember being just out of highschool at a time when most young people were forming new friends and getting beyond old horizons and becoming their own self. Dating is going to be more casual for them.
