You’re forgetting about one thing
In this trip the one leading you and being the expert so to speak was the 39 year old dude
Women are attracted to leaders, masters and so on
I’m not sure if at your age you have to forget about the 20 year olds. There’s a lot of young girls out there into older dudes and some don’t even know it
Whatever it is your best bet is to keep fit and play your strengths whatever those may be. Also approach obviously young or old doesn’t matter

Yep, can't count the number of times in the army some female soldier of equal rank or within one was attracted to me just because I was in charge of some detail we were all on. Can't count how many times the same thing happened in a number of group settings where I was seen as the expert with the answers.
Lead a group, know what you're doing, even for a short amount of time and watch the panties drop.

As a girl...perhaps those 3 girls were just looking for flings and wanted something "new" or "exotic" because they were out on an adventure and wanted new experiences because imho, if it is everyday life, we want guys with good hygiene. ALWAYS.
Girls can have different preferences but I think we all can collectively agree on the importance of hygiene and that it is a big factor atleast for me and a majority of us.
And maybe they liked that those blokes didn't try to get into their pants too. (There can be lots of reasons I can think of that doesn't really relate to age).
If you look old there may be some girls who can still be attracted to you though. Like I said, there are a lot of women in the world with different preferences.
However, if it is an age thing, imho in general girls would gravitate towards someone within their own generation (mostly within 5 year age gap either older or younger), it may be because being in the same generation, they feel like they can relate better with each other because it will definitely be different dating someone from a different generation and may be harder to relate to one another unless the girl is an old soul or vice versa and their emotional maturity are the same.

I’ve got one word for you: novelty. I’m a woman and I don’t even know how I stumbled onto this subreddit but it’s fascinating lol. The rules don’t really apply while on vacation, I may be attracted to fit white guys in my everyday life but the idea of having a whirlwind romance with a foreigner is going to be almost universally appealing to most people. Plus there’s very little expectation in that scenario, you don’t have to worry about what your family and friends will think and there’s a time limit on it.

There is a lot of evolutionary biology going on with this, but basically women are sexually repulsed by those who look, smell and taste like they could be family because incest=retarded kids. So when when on vacation and you are exposed to males who could not possibly share any DNA with (meaning they could not possible be family), there tends to be much stronger attraction. Couple that with the guy being a rugged, alpha male silent type and you got the making of a porno movie.
