I'd even drop the "I know this is random" part since you both know its a random conversation. I like the upfront and honest approach, but no need to be redundant. My go to opener is "You're so adorable I just had to come talk to you. Hi I'm Nintendew."

It is socially unusual to go up to a girl in the middle of the day and tell her she's attractive and start to talk to her. It's not weird or bad, but just unusual.

I know books like Mystery Method and The Game always mention negging girls but I've found that complimenting her and telling her how you feel, in a confident, straight up manner will lead to attraction quite often. And the times it doesn't, you'll have saved a lot of time. I love the brutal honesty.
On the other hand, if a girl has a sharp sense of humor and is a bit of a ball-buster, that's when I start returning the favor. With these girls you can just grab them after a little conversation and say, "you're so hideous" just before you kiss them.

I found the complete opposite. As far as the whole 9's and 10's. Every time I go out with 2 or more friends, I'll see the girls they consider 9's and 10's and to me they're 6's and 7's. Everyone is different and no matter how hot you think a girl is, you'll find a set of guys who don't find her attractive.
I wouldn't use the "Hey stop it, you attract me. Now why did you have to do that? I don't have time to get attracted today." because it comes off weak (in my opinion). I used the "you look beautiful" line this weekend on a girl who the majority of my friends thought was 'hot'. She stood there smitten and didn't know what to say, I continued to compliment her features, lips, neck, ass. She asked me, "how do you know what my ass feels like?" I pulled her closer to me and grabbed it firmly, gave her a kiss and told her she looked incredible. It worked out very well.
edit - I should note that I read her body language, her facial features, even though she didn't say much I knew she was into me at that moment.
"Um, thanks I guess?" How do you followup with that?
I was very comfortable, I felt confident and I really wanted her. I didn't beat around the bush and she could sense my sincerity. Don't overthink it. And if you're thinking something about the girl, no matter how dirty or how poorly you think it will work, just stop. Walk up to her. And say it. Most guys assume, "Um, thanks I guess?" How do you followup with that? and they don't even bother trying. When they hear it from me, it's refreshing.

True, to some extent. I have seen some hideous girls get approached more often than their hotter friends. The only thing I can think of is, maybe they thought they had a better chance with the ugly one lol.
As far as the whole approach goes, pay attention to a girl that is getting hit on by several guys. Try and listen to what they say. I haven't heard too many guys give a direct compliment straight from the start. They are usually beating around the bush, and in nightclubs, they'll just approach the girl, and start dancing.
I guess everyone has their own way of approaching, but for me the direct almost always seems to work.

Mystery and Neill are big fans of negs. I think I'll start to avoid using them as I've grown to find that some girls refuse to take them lightheartedly. I've had some chicks raging when I call them a dominatrix

Hahah! Yes, you have to be careful with negs, humor is always offensive. Some people just find different things more offensive than others. Compliments however, what is she going to do? Flip out that you told her you find her gorgeous? In what world??
If she flips out, call her out on it. Tell her, "are you testing me to see if I'll back down? Come with me right now, I'll relieve your stress." - The one thing is that I never hesitate and I don't feel intimidated by them. Most guys will think about what her response is. I'm pretty comfortable thinking on my feet and I have a response for anything she gives me. Once she see's that I'm not a pussy who is concerned with what she thinks, she will get attracted 9/10 times.

Well, what your opinion? Have you tried them? Can't hurt.
Personally I've had pretty good luck with direct openers in both day and night. They don't always hook, but when they do they hook HARD. But that what works for ME. I've tried on plenty of other styles of opening that worked for shit for me, but other people raved about. Just not congruent to my personality type.
So my advice is to try it yourself and see.

When I've tried them so far the results are very varied. Some girls are charmed, others shocked and some look at me like I've just killed a baby. I guess it all depends on the girl. I think I need to improve my body language in order to get better success rates while doing it.

Body language and sub-communication are definitely huge. I've had many girls tell me how creepy it is when random guys tell them "damn you're so hot/sexy/etc" or "you're the hottest girl here" when I had used the exact line of "wow you are really cute, I can't let you leave without meeting you" on her when we met and she was absolutely enthralled. I've pointed this out, that I basically did the same thing as the "creepy" guys she is talking about, and they always qualify it as "well, I guess, but I could tell that you were being GENUINE so I took it as a nice compliment"
