It gives me confidence, at least for me. It depends on how you perceive your physical appearance. For people with higher game like Luke Or Tyler says, your physical appearance probably won't matter at all. But for beginners and people who are starting off, looking good can help quite a bit

Being physically active has many benifits beside looking better. A gym might not be the best for you but I do suggest working out, it will make you feel like a much better person, as it helps boost the amount of seratonin and dopamine in your system.
The gym is also a great place to approach, I am currently not in gym because I just moved to a new area and am trying to decide if I want to do CrossFit, Orange Theory, or just get a personal trainer, but I will say that most of my best approaches have been from girls I met in the gym.

I go to the gym for myself. Granted I used to be a good shape and then slacked for years, and now coming back because I miss it. As long as you're not overweight, the difference is marginal but I helps with confidence.

Take my advice, hit the gym. Even if you're super good at game, looking better will help.

Important for what? A high N count? A more attractive LTR? What is your goal?
It will exponentially increase the amount of women who are attracted to you.

I've been working out heavily (focus being bodybuilding with some strength training aspects, less endurance-style work) for years. Personally, it simply makes me feel a lot better. It certainly has improved my confidence - I used to be a pretty skinny guy. After a brutal workout session I feel satisfied and unstoppable, that's why I like hitting the gym before a night out - gets me in the perfect mood.
As for aesthetics, even though I get compliments on my body from girls occasionally, it feels like I get approached by guys more often due to being fit, haha ("yo, how much you bench, bro?", "wanna arm-wrestle, dude?).

I don't go to the gym. My confidence is through the wall. I am not a gym person and never will be. It is important to be healthy. Being healthy seems to boost most people confidence.
