You felt the sexual tension. She broke the tension by mouthing "what??". If she was attracted to you, you rejected her by mouthing "nothing".

You would have been better off blowing her a kiss instead of mouthing "nothing". If she blushed or blew a kiss back then it would have been time to talk to her.

By rejecting someone before you even know what they think you may be protecting yourself from rejection, but at the same time you are sabotaging any positive interactions that could have been.

With your perceptions of yourself, that you don't have the face or body you want you create in your mind what other people are thinking of you.

As for rejection, no one really rejects you. You reject yourself because of the meaning you give to experiences.

I did the exact same. Got the exact same question. Said "nothing" with a smile and a soft laugh, it went well. I think she was just not used to me doing that.

First off, you didn't need too hold it that single-mindedly. But since you found yourself in that situation, the problem in your response to her is that you decided to feel awkward and nervous about it so she followed suit.

I don't think what you did was wrong. The location on the other hand... Plenty of people are somewhat uncomfortable in elevators as you are locked up with strangers in a small space. Maybe she would've reacted differently if it happened when waiting in line to pay your groceries or something.
