So finally I confronted my fears and decided to ask out random girls that I meet everyday. I asked out two girls this week, and I wanted to tell you the lessons I learned from them.

About myself, I am actually decent looking. But I am short, so I guess that makes me average looking. I am not all a bad communicator. I actually have many female friends, its just that I find it very hard to express my feelings to a girl.

My general in both approaches were as following. I will be walking back to my home from the tram/ bus and will approach a girl om the same way. I will accompany her till her apartment. I am always respectful and mindful about the fact that I am a total stranger to the girl. First, I ask an unrelated question (whether she studies in a nearby university/ whether she is from my country). Then I will ask about other details like her course or what is she generally doing etc etc. One of my go to lines were that I am new to this place and wanted to get to know some people here (its actually true). The whole conversation lasts close to 7-8 minutes. When we eventually reach her apartment, I tell her that maybe we could exchange numbers and grab a coffee sometime.

Results: I think both of them were nice when approached and were happy to talk to me. One girl even thanked me funnily enough. One girl took my number, but she never called me. Other girl did not even wanted to share the number, and looked visibly upset that I even asked.

My understanding was that they are really open to strike up a conversation, even with a total stranger. That alone should be a reason enough for men to approach girls.

Lessons and mistakes: My first mistake is that, I fail to make the conversation interesting. My intention is always to make a memorable conversation, but I fail to do that. I even fail to make a joke in.between. So its no wonder that both of my approaches failed. I might have to learn how to do that, or at the very least ask interesting questions.

Also my second mistake is the place where I approach. Normally asking for a number after 7-8 minutes of conversation feels forced. But I have a reason for it, as I said that couple of minutes is all I have in total. I am not even sure I will see her again, and that is generally the case. So I have no option, other than to try my luck. The underlying problem here is the place where I approach, which is on the way to her house. You are never going to get enough time to talk to her if thats the case. So next time I want to appraoch women at a place where I am sure I have enough time to talk to them (park, library...).

Also my final mistake is to ask for her number. As I said you need to atleast have a longer conversation. But that is just part of the problem. I/ we need to approach girls with a open mind. You need not ask for her number all the time, you need not even try to approach to take her out. Your focus should be to try to make an interesting conversation and ask her number only if you think she is comfortable and happy to give it to you. Probing is a right word here. Asking for the number all the time feels increadibly forced. You need to go with the flow and ask her when it feels right. I cant tell you when it is right as even I have not see it. but I think when she is having a good time then you definitely should.

Thats my two cents. I am really thankful for all the tips and lessons you guys posts. I found it very useful and wanted to know what I thought as well.
