One thing about being out alone is that if you stay too long in a bar/club alone and talking to no one, your perceived value will drop over time. So, say 30 minutes-1 hour one place, then bounce.

If you a hook a set that seems like it's mainly going to end in a number (she's with lots of friends, bad logistics, etc), then use a false time constraint ("gotta meet up with friends soon elsewhere") and get a number before you leave ("but hey, you seem cool, we should go out for drinks sometime [pulls out phone]. Gimme your number and I'll get in touch").

If she's way into you and some escalation has happened and logistics are good, don't bounce but stay, isolate, escalate the shit out of it, and see how far it goes. Always be closing.

A few other things about going out alone in these regards. Calibrate yourself to the sets. I'm not one to cold approach a group of women out of the blue, as in simply butting into their conversation. Other guys do that well and if you are one of them, go for it. I usually use environmental/situational openers (comment on what's on the bar tv, the music playing, something stupid happening in the area, or even "got a light?"). Once I get a woman talking to me, I do pretty well from there.

Other solo tips. If you have found a place to camp out at (the bar, near the band, whatever), do not have your head/eyes darting around. It will be very clear what you are doing and this bad body language will turn off women around you. You are clearly looking for someone to hit on and when you are solo is this looks especially bad.

Your attitude, body language, and conversational topics for the first 10 minutes or so should in no way come off as, "I'm out tonight to hit on chicks." Rather, it should be, "I came out tonight to enjoy myself and now find myself in a pleasant conversation with a pleasant woman." If you come off as working a pick-up angle too early, it's over.

But if she's still talking to you 10 minutes in, she's getting hooked. Now you must stop talking about frivolous things around you but rather get the conversation on her. Get her talking about herself, her life, loves, passions, or even interesting social topics, etc. Give your honest opinion, don't grovel or kiss up. Keep good eye contact and prepare for a little, light kino (touch her arm, back, etc. very briefly when making a point).

Try not to spend too much time with her in the place you met her if its a bar or a club (unless there's a band playing you both came to see... getting her to bounce away from a live band when she's paid a cover is not likely to work). Drink with her for maybe an hour at most and then try to get her to go someplace else for another drink.

If she game for it, you have hooked it and things are going great (you've got a for sure number close, likely a k-close, and if you play it right an f-close). If she's not into leaving, number close right away and leave. If you stay after she says she doesn't want to leave, you are now a beta-orbiter and its also over.

My friends are all PUA guys so I've never gone out by myself before. But I might have to try it sometime.

Fuck your childish friends. Take my advice and board the next bus for West Vaginia without them. Bask in the glow of "I told you so" when you start pulling tail left and right. But don't be tempted to let them in on your action once you've got too many girls to handle. Your dimwitted buddies will just blow it for you the same way my childish friends do when I forget my own rule and let them wing.
