Keep replaying this in my head and want some feedback on how I should have handled it better.

Background: I live in Oregon now but I'm in New York visiting friends and two days ago decided to take a run. I was dying of thirst as I neared the end so I stopped at a grocery store to get a bottle of water. This is how the interaction with the (pretty damn cute) cashier went.

Her: Did you run here...

Me: Yeah.

Her: From where

Me [got kind of nervous]: From Connecticut (born and raised there but obviously she meant where did you run from but I answered it like 'Where are you from)

Her: You ran from Connecticut...

Me: No I mean that's where I'm from but I'm staying in the city. I just ran from my hotel.

Her: Oh okay I was going to be like that's pretty far. Im from Jersey. I take the ferry here.

Me: How long does that take

Her: Oh it's pretty fast actually.

Then this bitchy older lady who I guess is the manager is like 'Jess after this customer take your break.'

I wanted to keep talking to her but then she scanned my water and told me 'Have a good one' and I left. I don't think she was just being nice or curious. She seemed into me.

Now I live frigging far from NYC anyway and I'm not looking for long distance love or anything lol. But what if this had happened back at home... hoping for tips to handle this sort of thing better, come up with more to say, get a number, whatever.
