Here's my problem:

Sometimes when messaging a girl, I think of a funny statement or response. However, because my jokes often require a set up and punch line, they end up being a paragraph, and it just looks asymmetric and socially uncalibrated to have a girl text you a couple lines, and to give her a paragraph back.

I feel like I need to condense my jokes into pithier and more laconic one-liners. Be more of a Steven Wright or Mitch Hedberg than a Norm MacDonald or Stewart Lee.

Here's an example:

Girl I'm messaging (whom I met at a party) mentions playing volleyball. Here's my response:

Ah, volleyball girl. Checks out. After seeing how ruthless you are at party games, it makes sense that they'd make you play a game that separates the teams via net. Only way to guarantee the other side's safety!

But, like, that's a paragraph. I need to distill the essence of that joke into two lines or something, while still maintaining the structure that makes it a joke.

It isn't just this instance. This is a general thing I struggle with.

TL;dr how do I be funny but brief
