Parents are tricky because there is no way of knowing what their stance on their daughter talking to guys is until you meet them. I have met parents (of friends) who will not let their daughter talk to random guys, will encourage their daughter to talk to guys; and everything in between.

Typically it is best to not approach when they are with their parents. Even if the parent is okay with it there is a good change that either the daughter or the parent will be put in an awkward conversation. Also, if she is with her parents she is probably not in the mood to be approached by anyone. She is there to spend time with her mother/father, not to meet guys. That's what parties are for.

Haha. Honestly? Not a good idea until you're starting to get comfortable with cold approaches. If you're at that point (and the following is TOTALLY ANECDOTAL ADVICE AND PROBABLY MORONIC but it has worked for me so...) then here is my little guide.

Never try it with her father there. It's not gonna work. Don't try it with brothers there either. Also destined to fail. If it's her and her mom, small polite chit chat to get yourself acquainted (lots of questions about them) combined with subtle flirting with the mother. Not overt hitting on her, just the sort of cocky friendly you are with your favorite middle aged woman in your office. Then, you flat out tell her that you'd love to get to know the daughter better, and would she mind if you got a cup of coffee with her? Again you've got to be polite, sweet, and engaging. You might get the chance to pull her aside this way and get her number. Don't even try the k close or anything else in front of the mother. The # is the most that I think is feasible here. From there proceed like any other day 2.
