How important are social networking tools like Facebook?

I don't think there is too little, only too much.

seeing someone with an empty facebook will not hurt him at all. But seeing a guy posting stupid shit all the time may be a turn off.

I think FB should be treated like communication in real life. If you don't have anything good to say, don't say it. Its even more dangerous on FB because everyone can see it and can never unsee it.

I wouldn't know since I'm not an expert but I can only tell you how I would use it. Take my advice if you will. That said, I keep my social profile at a very minimum. It contains virtually no information on me as I believe it can hurt me sometimes in the future. It does contain my name and my photo and some info that is general knowledge anyway.

However, I use the messenger of facebook to keep in touch with people/friends whom I can't reach due to distance/time troubles. Further, I always tell people if they ask about my facebook that I have one but it's very empty as I prefer to meet face to face. Somehow, people appreciate this so it's working up till now.

So inshort, I use it as a tool to setup a meeting in real life primarily, and as a tool to keep in touch with people who I can't reach easily.

Do what YOU want man. If you are just maintaining facebook to impress girls and give the impression that you're someone else, then it's not worth it. Give less fucks and actually do interesting things, then facebook will reflect that...

The first problem I could see from this is of course the "creepy" side of it - their (the girls) facebook profile will tell you a lot about them, they will surely check out your profile. I don'tthink it is a red flag in todays society - it is your way of sticking out from the crowd and defining YOU. The problem with it is, from your perspective, that you can't learn anything about them, you wont get invited to "random" events that you might get invited to otherwise because you pop up on their list of people to invite. I use facebook quite a lot to stay in contact with my friends, I would see it as a setback if I had my facebook profile taken from me. I do use some time on facebook but I wouldn't say it is taking up too much time of my life. if it did I should get rid of my phone aswell as it rings and beeps when I get text messages; again facebook is just a way for me to communicate.

So in short: I dont see my facebook profile as a social thing where people can check out how fun or cool I am , it is a way for me to talk to girls, friends and family.
