Yes.
Seriously, the sum total of information you have on a person before you actually talk is their appearance. For better or worse a judgment call is made. I'm not saying that you can't change someone's impression of you through talking and time, however you certainly don't want to neglect your appearance, why sacrifice the single best way to make a first impression through being sloppy?

I agree. Unless by appearance he means race/ethnicity then unfortunately you can't do much for that.

That's what I thought. If you go up looking sloppy, you don't take care of yourself. People will always judge before meeting you.

YES absolutely. also some girls, particularly the really horny sluts, are primarily driven by physical appearance like guys are. no matter what a girl values though she would always rather you look like a stud.

Some people are ugly, some are ok some are attractive. You can work on that to a certain extend, make sure youre clean, go to gym, shave, smell good, wear fit clothes etc... But the only real thing you have control about, is personality. Focus on that.

Yeah that's a big part once you start talking to them. If you have a good personality then you will be a good person to talk to and have a conversation with. Just the initial appearance is what gets me. Do I look good to go up to them.

You have no control over it beside what i mentioned before. Dont think about that.

Most definitely my friend.
More importantly, what does appearance mean?
Your parents have probably told you at some point in your lives to never judge a book by it's cover. We all do judge though, it's natural defence. Within seconds we've already went through our memory to find any resemblance to negative or positive things we've already experienced, to tell if we're safe or not.
It makes sense though, we're all creatures of habit and instinct. It's how we can tell when you should move across the street late at night to stay far away from the group of people ahead of you that could be dangerous, and it's how we point out a remarkable girl in a crowd.
Now I don't mean hot or sexy, but pretty and beautiful. A nice smile, complimenting the atmosphere, plaid but innocent skin, the attentive eyes that lock in place each person she has a conversation with around her, as if it's the only thing that's important.
Now you can tell this girl once you step into a room, she's not always the prettiest, but she has the biggest shine, and she makes the best appearance. Keep your chin up, dress well, smile, have fun, stand confident, be attentive, and you will make a good appearance.
Very well said. I like this. I'll keep my head up, put my smile on and present myself very well. I want that beautiful girl to notice me when I enter that room over all the other guys.
But again everyone has a different tastes. I just have to present myself in a confident way, to shine. That's what I want to do.

Just wash yourself daily, comb your hair and clean your fingernails.
If you're clean and you look like you give some effort towards your looks that is usually good enough to make a good first impression. You don't need to be "get her wet just by looking at you" good looking. Average looking guys like us can make a good impression with effort and cleanliness, and then let our personalities be our true asset.
If being clean and put together doesn't cut it for a woman. That's really too bad for her. She has to go through the rest of her life not knowing how amazing you are as a person, just because she was too shallow to find out.

Be well groomed and dressed decent, that's all you need to worry about. Hitting the gym wouldn't hurt either.
Having confidence is the equivalent to a nice ass and tits to a chick. Looks are an afterthought.

Define what you mean by appearance.
Are you wearing trashbags instead of clothing at a nightclub? You're probably going to have problems even if you look like Brad Pitt.
If we're talking about overall looks and not some idiotic case, then not all that much, at least with person-to-person interaction. In-person interactions are about your confidence, charisma, and overall vibe. But when it comes to online dating, people are much more judgmental with respect to looks.
People place way too much importance on looks. It's not even a "well you can't change the way you look, so focus on personality", because it sounds like you're making a compromise. NO. Looks were never even that important in the first place.
Basically, as long as you shower and overall take care of yourself, you're set. Don't neglect your appearance just because "WELL LOOKS DON'T MATTER LEL", but most people place way too much emphasis on looks.
Appearance, I'm talking both about physical appearance and the way you dress. I'm not the kind of person who dresses up even if I'm going to somewhere like wal-mart. But I do try my best to match a little and look presentable to people.
mostly about the physicality. People will judge you by how you look physically.
People will judge you by how you look physically.
Not as much as you think they do. People don't really judge you for the way you look. People judge you for the way you judge yourself.
