What do you mean, "something else came up?" You made a date, you already had plans and then afterwards, you made plans for something else, which you should have turned down because you had a prior commitment. It is really rude to cancel a date because something better came along, it makes the woman feel like your second choice.

Assuming you aren't cancelling last minute (if she doesn't have the time to make new plans with her friends, she'll have a whole evening to think you're a dick) the best plan is to HAVE a plan. "Gee, sorry we can't chill tomorrow, but I'd really like you to come over and watch this movie/take you out to this great place/whatever same time next week?" Most weeks are the same as others so it's a good shot she's free again, or she might suggest an earlier time if she's eager or that doesn't work. Getting her to agree immediately to a new outing at a new time means your hang out won't get cancelled or postponed due to anyone slacking, and lets her look forward to it again.

Just say you gotta help your parent out with something. My buddy told me to use that when canceling plans with a less attractive gal. Do this when prioritizing girls on the same night. If there is a girl you feel is more attractive and your chance of getting it in is higher. By all means.
