How to get better at conversations? Not only with women?

Here's my tip:

Talk to as many people as you can throughout the day. Literally, randomly talk to everyone. Store clerk, strangers, friends, etc.

Give it one week and you'll see how good you get it.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by taking the lead in a conversation. Do you mean like, let's talk about what I want to talk about??? Often it's easy to do that by posing a question. "Have you heard of xxxx???", "What do you think of xxxx???". Or inquiring into things the other person says. This is basically conversation threading.

For example, yesterday I got a ride back from my football game with someone who lives near me, but I did not know them one bit. He didn't play in the game, so my first question was why didn't you play??? Then I went from there. I can't even remember what I did after that :P, but we ended up having a good chat.

The way to lead to conversation is basically provide the topics in my opinion. Latch onto things they say and inquire about them (Not interviewer mode tho :P).
