The push-pull technique for creating attraction is one of the oldest known methods there is. However, it is always taught in the context of being a manipulative tip/trick to use to create attraction rather than how it can be employed in a healthier and more natural way.

First let's provide the classical definition of this method.

Pulling: Giving validation, attention, interest, or positive emotions to a person.

Pushing: Withdrawing positive emotions and/or creating distance between a person. For example: Not replying to texts in timely manner, canceling or delaying plans to get together, feigning a general loss of interest or acting indifferent.

The push-pull method advocates alternating between these two extremes to create a more dynamic and stimulating interaction.

One related manipulative technique that some coaches taught was called love bombing. Love bombing consists of piling tons of positive emotion onto a person and then instantly ceasing or taking them away. Thus creating a sense of withdrawal where the other person desperately desires the positive emotions back.

So why do such techniques seem to work?

Firstly, for a woman that is used to receiving tons of validation from everyone, you can appear as more of a challenge. Think of the hot girl that everyone hits on and is constantly showered with compliments and positive emotions. A person who does not simply act the same way as everyone else is instantly more intriguing and engaging.

Furthermore, who are the typical guys that are looking up dating advice online and trying to apply such methods? Well they are often the typical 'nice guy' that previously was afraid of ever offending another person or saying something that they wouldn't like. This behavior often leads to emotionless and boring conversations. So the push-pull technique often livens up their conversations and makes them more stimulating by providing a range of emotions.

In addition, the pushes can make these 'nice guys' seem less needy. The pushes at least make it appear like they are not as worried about losing the other person in comparison to their past default state of always trying to win the other person over at all costs by being super nice.

When implemented to the right degree, the push-pull method may be interpreted as flirtatious teasing and make a conversation more fun. But when overdone, or constantly done to manipulate the emotions of another person, it can come off as being incongruent and unnatural.

You attract what you are. If you play games then you will attract someone who is also into playing games and/or is addicted to drama.

However, all authentic interactions should already contain a natural give and take element. Push-pull happens naturally in a conversation when a person is speaking honestly, voicing their honest opinions and not just trying to tell the other person what they think they want to hear. On average, way more attraction will be created by being willing to disagree a bit than will be lost due to some disagreement.

A willingness to stand by your own honest opinions, beliefs, boundaries and standards will create a naturally enticing push-pull dynamic without the need for you to consciously play games.
