How to remember names at parties?

I got this from "How to win friends and influence people" and has worked really well in the past for me.

Simply go up to her or add it to a later conversation and say:

What's your name again? Sarah. <----- Might get offend here

At this point you quickly say.....

No.....(smile) not your First name your Last name.....

This way you have got both her last and first name without offending her.

"Remember that a person's name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language."

The sentence technique helps a bit. I use a technique of saying a descriptive sentence about the person under my breath. i.e.: "Jenn is a hot blonde in a little black dress." Another general memorization technique I us is to visual what I want to remember in text and associated image floating in front of my face, imagine sucking the image into my mind and stamping it on my brain. They key is remembering to remember, which is what I forget. (:

How about nicknames? Every time i run into a similar situation, i simply give them nicknames based on something about them. For example: Leather (black leather jacket), Redhead (dyed red), Blue, Stripes etc. Could also do some quirkier personality traits. But make it funny. Have it seem like you're doing it on purpose, not because you forgot their name.

What works for me is to relate the new name to a character or a friend with the same name. For example, I meet a girl named April I think, April like the reporter from TMNT. If I forget the name then I can usually remember what I related the name to in order to re-remember the name.

What I usually do is write their name 3 times on my leg with my finger right after they introduce themselves. The effort that goes in to figuring out how to spell the name, writing the name, and repeating 3 times seems to cement it in my memory.

Not the same scenario, but at my university I remember people, not just girls but everyone, by their cars. I love cars so it helps, and if I can't remember I work that in. So maybe something you like try and associate the person with thing.

Also, look up a show called "James Mays manlab" they did a segment on THIS, they tried like ten things and pointed out what helped and ways to improve the techniques

I usually just ask them. Alot of times they have forgot my name aswell so no harm done lol.

I learned this kick ass method in psych class. A method of remembering names is by imagining a related object that you associate them with, and then putting it on them. Say you meet a girl named Emily, for me I instantly think of a cat, so I visualize her with a cat on her head. When I see her I think "ha a cat she must be Emily". This is the method that mentalists use to remember a load of people. I guess there are even books of what the best things are to use for certain names. My max in one night was recalling 20 people only getting their name once.
