The first thing that you have to understand about millennials is that our brains have been become super addicted to novelty and instant gratification, primarily as a result of smart phones, the internet, and social media.

For example, a girl who in the past may have been approached and complimented by a stranger on average once per day, now can receive hundreds of compliments via apps like Instagram and Tinder within an hours’ time. Thus diluting much of what you may say to nothing more than background noise.

The raw content of a conversation is no longer good enough. You also need to be emotionally stimulating. At least more stimulating than the positive and negative emotional hits that they person could alternatively get from ignoring you and instead scrolling through social media feeds on their smartphones.

An important component of making a conversation emotionally stimulating is for the emotions being communicated to not all be predictably positive. There needs to be at least the potential for the conversation’s emotions to move in an unknown direction.

It’s not necessary to be purposely rude or insulting to another person in order to add emotional variability into a conversation. The same thing can naturally be achieved simply by being a person who is well-grounded in their beliefs, is not searching for another person’s approval, and is willing to voice disagreement with the other person.

In addition to making a conversation more stimulating, being willing to voice disagreement shows another person that you are not just telling them what you think that they want to hear. This will result in them respecting you more, and trusting that you are being honest with them.

When they feel that you are being authentic and honest, it is easier for a connection to grow.

We live in an attention based economy. Multi-billion dollar corporations are all vying for our attention. If you want to have any chance of competing against them, don’t give them the home court advantage by playing on their platforms. Instead, learn how to effectively socialize in the real world and put yourself in a completely different league.
