I'm just... not funny.

Stop trying to be funny. I tried to be funny in high school, and it rarely ever worked out. I used to get upset when one person would say/do something & it would get a roar yet when I did/said similar it got either a neutral or negative response. And then I gave up, I realized trying to be funny was a waste of my time.

And that's when I became funny. The pressure I put on myself to be humorous caused the opposite effect. The less I tried, the more my natural humor came out and now most people know me as one of the funniest people they know.

I've even done stand up comedy in recent years to well receptive crowds. I've had jokes fail, and sometimes I bounced back from it and sometimes I didn't, and most of the times I didn't it was because I was fumbling over myself in my head that I needed to convince the crowd I was funny.

But maybe you won't be particularly funny. And that's fine. Just don't be dry.

You're trying too hard. Also, it's not important to be funny. This is a huge misconception that keeps circulating around.

It's nearly impossible to build rapport with people when I'm apparently not funny.....

Yeah, you're on a wild goose chase here. You don't need to be funny. That has literally nothing to do with building rapport. In fact, trying to be an entertainer often hinders building rapport.

Building rapport is about listening and connection. All you need is to PAY ATTENTION before and while talking to someone. Then use the information you pick up by paying attention, in your conversation. And get people talking about themselves by asking them about a subject and then digging deeper into that subject. (Rather than going 20 questions and starting new threads after you get one sentence out of a girl.)

It doesn't take much.

The other comments are great. All I can add is women want to feel like they're seeing the real you. They have to feel like it's genuine. They want to see a strong, authentic character. For some men, that character is a funny, witty guy. For some it's a deep, dark and mysterious guy. When women say "just be yourself" it's kind of true, not in the cheesy sense, but in the sense that that's what they want to feel about you.

If you think you're having a hard time making fun, engaging conversation, look up "active listening" and learn to speak your mind with confidence and conviction. "Funny" guys are attractive because they say things without the undertone of seeking validation. They just say what's on their mind because it's what they want to say. The fact that it's funny isn't the point. If a girl is in to you, she'll laugh at anything.
