Its creepier to virtual semi stalk someone compared to being ballsy and manly and asking for what you want.

The facebook creep makes you look like a pussy. The asking for what you want makes you look like you chase after shit you want. Numbers are also more personal in my opinion. Any random fuck can have her on facebook. Only dudes that ask for her number will be in her contacts.

Also, sounds like you're at uni. Uni is a social artifice to some extent. You won't get big friendship networks like this once you leave, so you'll have to start asking for numbers then.

You know what else has changed through the technological advancement? You can have sex via the internet!! It is like the natural thing you know... said no one ever.

For example, say thay I met a girl from a party. I knew her name and turns out she is my friend's friend. Naturally, her name would just pop up on the friends' suggestions on Facebook. I would just add her as a friend, and if approved, initiate a conversation through Messenger.

It doesn't matter if it's "ethical", it's weak as fuck and will not get you into her pants. She will choose the guy that actually makes a move when he meets her. End of the story. Go out and meet women, then escalate, and if not possible ASK! her for her number to stay in touch. Then make a date and proceed as told above. If she's not receptive, next, rinse and repeat.
