Has it occurred to you that women are people an and she might be interested in who you are as a person and form a friendship rather than thinking of you romantically?
"Can my boyfriend come" Aka are you insecure
How would you react if your girlfriend comes home saying she gave her number to a guy at the library and are going out tomorrow and invites you to join, are you thinking "we're making friends" or will that threaten your relationship?
Honestly with that kind of reaction I would just forget it and find someone with compatible socioemotional framework

Who knows, you could reply with "Will he come as your personal chaperone to watch if everything goes appropriately?"
Probably she was playing with you, you can play along if it is not against your dignity.

How did you ask her out? Did you make your romantic intentions clear?

"She didn't indicate she had a bf at all when I asked her out for drinks"
Whether asking for drinks made your romantic intentions clear depends on your bodylanguage and vibe. If you came across the wrong way she could really think, you just want to be friends.
Something similar happend to me several times: (years ago, when I started picking up women in real life)
I thought I had asked out a women. When I met up with her I thought I was on a date, but she thought otherwise. For her it was casually meeting an acquaintance. Not all women in real life are automatically in dating mode just because you say you want to meet up with them.

This is either a girl with some right leaning humor throwing in a joke/tease or the girl is legitimately asking and you totally failed to communicate this is a romantic thing.
If it's the latter case the lead is dead anyway, so just assume it's a joke and pass it like a shit test. "of course, let him pay for our drinks".
