I have used this and had it backfire: Girl and guy walk into a party together, head in separate directions the whole night. She wanders over to get a smoke from him from time to time.

When her and I start talking, I say 'So whats your boyfriends name?' Read: 'are you single' in a non agressive way.

She doesn't correct me by saying 'oh, thats my best friend, blah blah blah' and failed the bf test.

Later I found out she just doesn't like correcting people. She hooked up with my friend later at the next party.

IMO don't ask. You don't care or need to know if they are with anyone.

Its like what Badboy says, if a girl tells you she has a boyfriend its like her telling you she has shoes, in this age society expects pretty girls to always be with someone. Even if they are single they might be telling people that are in a relationship. The best advice is to not care about it, if she is with someone you want to be so much more fun they she forgets all about the other guy.

Best thing is to do it as soon as possible when you meet her.

Try opening with it. As an opener "are you single?" can save you a lot of time.
