The word "Sorry" is not bad it of itself... you are simply sorry that the situation is the way it is. That's legit. It's not really an "apology"... it's just a common thing to say, and it may let her know you're interested a little more than "Hey, I've been busy" would. In any case, don't think too hard about it. Just write what feels natural and honest.

Why are you apologizing? Your supplicating when you have no reason to. I would simply say Hey I've been busy, then continue on to whatever you were going to do, presumably asking her out.

Use the circumstances to get her number. Say something like, "Hey, I've been too busy to write lately. Give me your number and I will call you soon." I did something similar to this yesterday, except it was "Hey I don't like to communicate on Facebook. Give me your number and I will call you soon." Had the number within hours.

You need to stop talking to her over any kind of long-distance medium and use those mediums to get you closer to face-face interaction. That is what you want, after all isn't it?

Don't acknowledge the time gap. Just resume the conversation. let her bring it up if she must, and then say "i've had a full calendar lately and its hard to find time to send emails, since i'm a terrible typist. Shoot me your number so we can chat and catch up."

If you are actually into this girl, saying "Hey I've been busy." Comes across as. "Yeah, I've been busy. Deal with it. You're not a priority for me." Which makes you look a bit of a dick.

Saying "Sorry, I've been busy." Doesn't make you look pathetic, it just expresses regret that you have not been able to talk with her as much as you'd like. And if you HAVENT been talking to her as much as you'd like, then that's legit.
