So I was on a Greyhound bus today travelling between two cities and the ride is about two and a half hours. I've been on them before and I'm aware that everyone generally keeps to themselves and usually has headphones in throughout the trip.

Today though, I had a really attractive woman sit next to me. I gave her a smile and made a comment about the dress she was wearing and how it matched everything else (It was a white dress, she had white shoes, a macbook, and a phone with a white case all clearly visible). She smiled back and made a joke about labour day.

Then that was it. Immediately, headphones in, and absolutely no communication afterward.

Has anyone had any experience with this? I've read "The Game" and I remember that a key stipulation was that you had to show that you weren't going to bother them for long when initiating a conversation. What should I have done?

To add, my primary intention was not to get a number or anything, just to have friendly conversation.
