I notice you use the verb "get", like you are not leading the interaction.

You should be giving THEM your handshake, and then leading the interaction. Introduce yourself, you can tell them what you were doing with your mutual friend, find out how they know him and what they are doing at the moment.

Don't just give your name and then hang around waiting for your friend to get done like you aren't important to the conversation. They are getting a chance to meet CallMeRex, how lucky they are. Give them that gift of meeting you, because you are more interesting than anyone else they are going to meet that day.

THis can be tricky. Last night I was in the same situation except I took the initiative, introduced myself, and tried to make conversation, I would get some responses but ultimately I was ignored so they could talk to my friend.

Happens a lot. I find the best thing to do is introduce yourself. Make sure they know you have mutual friends and then walk off and let them have their conversation. If you stick around at the same party you can reapproach them and they'll be comfortable enough to talk because they know you have a mutual friends.

Trying to butt in on your friend's conversation, in my opinion, can make you look annoying
