No you can't. You can use the power of suggestion, but no way are you going to hypnotize someone.

A lot of the earliest PUA techniques were based on NLP but results were generally poor so the community moved on to better things. But there are a few useful things, here and there. We're discussing one old NLP routine called "Eliciting Values," in another thread right now.

There is a great book called Sapiens. One if the central premises is that what separates humans from other animals is that we are capable of believing in intangible things. The author spends a lot of time talking about these things - Religion, Nation, Money, Law and specific creations such as The Limited Company. So in the context of this thread, humans are born 'programmable' if you want to describe it that way. People have been programming or persuading other people since we have been here. In that sense, NLP is not new but it is another, smaller intangible concept that many people like to believe in. So in my opinion, NLP works and is also a fictitious creation.

NLP is pseudoscientific nonsense that nonetheless can work. To the extent that it works, though, it is either because:

It is just giving good general advice ("pay attention to the way the other person communicates and communicate back in a similar style"), despite having gussied up that good general advice with NLP jargon to make it sound NLP-exclusive.
It recommends a genuinely effective technique (mirroring, for example, definitely works) that is not actually excusive to NLP.
It has, through witch-doctoring, done such a good job of convincing the NLP practitioner that they have special communication powers, that the practitioner is unconsciously giving off physical and verbal cues of mastery that cause the target to respond to them more favourably.

What do I mean by "pseudoscientific"? Well, take the eye direction stuff. Even NLP effectively admits that it's completely unreliable by throwing in constant disclaimers that "each person is different", or "this may be reversed in some people". In a classic pseudoscientific bait-and-switch, though, they don't say that up front! They tell people first that eye cues work, and then frame the "everyone is different, actually" as advanced NLP. Classic snake-oil playbook right there: Frame your weakness as a strength and tell people that they are NLP experts for figuring out that eye cues are not reliable.

Nothing that NLP recommends is as reliable as they say it is. Take "anchoring". So the idea is that I tell some exciting story so my target is feeling excited and amazed, and then tap the table or touch my chest or some other innocuous-seeming but noticeable action. Then later, I can repeat that action when I want to reproduce that feeling in them so I can transfer it to a different subject (for the PUA, usually, "hey, let's get out of here and head to my place").

Can that work? Sure...but it's not going to be reliable without a lot of repetition. Personally, I think it more works because of my #3 point above. If the practitioner is really sure it will work, and thus really sure that the target is going to re-experience their excitement in that moment then their whole manner in that moment will be giving off a "you're totally going to be excited by this" vibe. Their tone of voice and body language will be sending clear signals to their target that they should be getting excited. So the "anchor" is really not so much working on the target as it is working on the practitioner, enabling them to give off exactly the right signals at the right time by convincing them that they know a magic trick.

So, do not pay for an NLP course. Read the NLP stuff online if you want, there's lots of it, but first google "persuasion techniques" and read all you can about that. Then when you read the NLP stuff, you will quickly notice that NLP makes use of many, many of these techniques. Some they wrap up in their own jargon so they can teach it explicitly as their own material. The rest they use against their students to persuade them of various things about NLP.
