So I have a problem that I'm sure others have had and initially I thought it was just a few occurrences but now I am curious as to why this keeps happening

Basically whenever I get a girls number from a cold approach they never respond when i text them. I've gotten a few numbers since school started for me a month and sure enough even though I click with some they never get back to me

I have seen responses to similar problems before and the advice is always "make sure you all make a connection with the person" and I have started to make sure I do this by making sure we get into a conversation about interest we have and different passions.

I typically always open with "Hi what's your name" and then ill give a light compliment like "your really cute" or "you look really nice". I never sound nervous since I've done this a good amount of times and the conversation is always pretty light and most of the time we end up both laughing and making jokes

What confuses me is that a lot of the time I can tell that they really like talking to me and I'm making a good impression on them. A few even completely light up when I suggest we get together sometime. Is it just coincidence all the times it's happened or am I doing something wrong?
