The basic advice is really good and something that I've been doing for a few years with great success. However, I don't understand why the author chooses to focus on the number at all or why he calls it a "soft close"???

This is how my typical day game close looks like:

Me: So here's the deal. I wanna go on a date with you.

Girl: We can think about it || You can have my number

Me: I could have your number but I know you're busy and I am busy so let's skip the whole scheduling something via text and lets just figure it out now. What days work best for you

...

Me: Cool, lets meet Friday at 8 outside blah. What's your number in case I get hit by a truck?

I get the girl's number but I dont really give a lot of importance to it. If a girl focuses a lot on the number and not the date, i tell em something like 'look, i cant even wipe my ass with a number'

A common mistake people make when trying to do this is that they set very tentative plans("lets plan to hang friday evening"). It's not the same thing. Make a concrete plan that involves a day, time and place("Friday 8pm at that starbucks").
