Direct might mean "I thought you looked cute". Or it could be even milder, like "I wanted to say Hi". Or it might use indirect words but with an expression (such as a smile or smirk) that says, "BTW this isn't about getting directions I think you're really hot."

In other words, it's not what you say but how you say it.

Years ago when I was checking out at a cafeteria talking about food and workout routines with the cashier girl, my friend who was behind me told me, "Damn, you had such a 'I want to go to bed with you' look in your eyes!" Too bad I didn't know game then ... but now I know what works.

I do like direct game (although I believe it depends on what kind of girl you trying to attract). But you specifically said "for shy men", and thus I would recommend at least for start an indirect style of game assuming a direct game would be too big of a step for a shy man and wouldn't be able to perform it genuinely. Remember you still have to lead and escalate. Game isn't much about the opener as what you do after the conversation sparks, there is no magic opener. Go get your feet in the water build some confidence and then try so see and adapt the kind of game which works best for you. Good luck.
