Context: Earlier this week, I approached a girl after our last lecture before our final exam for our summer class. Throughout the course of the term, I noticed that she and I would exchange glances on occasion (she's also smiled at me as I exited the classroom to fill my water bottle and she was on her way inside) and have sensed a sexual tension between us. However, I hadn't actively attempted to interact with her directly until this last week because we normally sit in different areas of the class (I'm normally towards the front center and she usually is seated around the middle/back, right side of the room) and a lot of the time she is occupied with conversing with her friend.

The day I approached the girl, after class, was group presentation day. While my group was presenting, I caught her eyeing me up and down before it was my time to speak, so I figured that I should definitely pursue since she may be interested. Towards the end of class, most of the other students left early because they weren't interested in reviewing for the final. Luckily for me, the girl had also stayed for the review, and, once class was dismissed, we left around the same time, and she was the next person behind me as we exited the classroom. She went ahead of me towards the stairs to the bottom of the building, and this is where the exchange begins.

The Exchange/FR: The girl was a few feet ahead of me, walking downstairs. Once I had entered the stairwell, I asked, "Hey, is your name 'x'?", since she had said it during her introduction of her presentation. She slowed down and said, "yes", and I told her my name as a formality (even though she likely remembered it from my presentation). She seemed like she was unsure about whether to shake hands, so I went ahead and reached out, and we shook hands.

By this point we were on the landing between floors, and I continued my dialogue by segueing with, "I know this might be an odd question" brief pause "what's your height?". She said "5 8", and then I revealed, "The reason I'm asking is because, from my experience, that's really uncommon". The girl responded, "Really?", and I replied "Yup" (In hindsight, I should have clarified that I meant her height was fairly uncommon amongst women. Also, I am 6"-6"1' for more context).

Now, here is where I was left wondering: As we got to the next floor and I was about to turn to continue downstairs, she stopped, said "Oh, I'm going this way", and pointed towards the next floor. She continued, "See you on Monday", which is when our final exam is. She might have genuinely had to go the other way, but I'm not sure if this may have been a shit test because it really caught me off guard that we literally spoke for 30-45 seconds before she decided to begin terminating the conversation. Since it was evident that we planned on going separate ways, and I didn't want to appear like I was forcing the conversation, I committed to going my original route to the bottom of the stairs.

Before we parted ways, I inquired, "Are you taking any other classes this summer?". She told me which class she'll be taking, and then I returned, "Alright, see you on Monday." End of exchange/FR.

I'm not sure if I should try talking to her again this week, which may be the last time I see her for the foreseeable future. My plan is to play it by ear and see how she reacts when we see each other for the final exam before deciding whether to approach again. Then again, it might be difficult to sync up a time to talk because I wouldn't want to make things uneasy before the exam in case she isn't interested, and the odds are slim that we'll finish and leave at the same time. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Edit: A few more relevant details;

  • I wasn't expecting the conversation to be that brief. A part of me is concerned that I may have scared her away by asking about her height, but that is one of the things that made her stand out to me, so I thought commenting about it would be okay to do.

  • This girl is fairly reserved, yet she carries herself well at the same time; modest is one way to put it. I did mention there were times when I felt a tension between us, but based on her demeanor, I felt that being gradual, yet still direct, would fit the situation better than a more typical pick up approach. My initial intent was to ask her on a date, however my plan was to create more momentum and allow our dialogue to develop more before popping the question. But we only got to talk for about a minute. I guess it's kind of difficult to gauge this interaction, due to its brevity, which is the main part that is getting me. Looks like I'll have to reexamine things when I see her next time.

  • Based on her name, she is Armenian, and I am not. If anyone is familiar with Armenian culture, due to many reasons, notably the Armenian genocide, most families strongly encourage, even expect, their people to date/marry only others within that ethnicity. This might be a factor in her initial signs of interest, yet avoidance when it came to when I approached her (besides my weirdness).
