I almost always prefer facebook to number and usually get number through facebook for reasons of social proof and to scope each other out, as well as link them things in a less high-stakes way.

There's a lot reasons why, too many too list right now BUT for instance you can scope them out and see if they are actually attractive and not just using flattering angles (I stopped talking to 2 girls who I found out were fatter than they appeared).

I'm also pretty comfortable with the social status my profile conveys as it allows them to see many instances of social proof which establishes a more personal connection (at least in their minds) than a blank number with no picture or visual stimulation just text and phone calls.

I'd also imagine there's a greater social barrier that needs to be overcome for a "number" than for Facebook. You can simply do more things on Facebook than you can with a number.
