Questions about validation

Validation is when an outside entity affirms that some subject has value. Here is an example:

Man says to woman, "I just got back from swimming." Woman says, "Oh, you swim? That's awesome."

In that example, the woman was validating the man. People validate others with compliments and by giving their attention.

Let's play the scenario out a different way:

Man says to woman, "I just got back from swimming. Isn't that awesome?" Woman says, "Sure I guess."

Seeking validation is something to be avoided, as it takes away from your perceived value. In the example, the man said something in a way that he tried to elicit validation from the woman. His attempt to get validation left him looking like a loser fishing for compliments.

Look for boasting/listing accomplishments in public for examples of people seeking validation.

if someone says or does something that you feel requires an affirmation from you or others about, then it's validation seeking. hope that helps.

You're probably more familiar with the passive-aggressive version, "compliment fishing". Both of them are basically just passive-aggressive ways of seeking compliments, often undeserved.
