You're probably not even in any "zone" yet. You should walk with her to one of her classes and get to know a little about her. If she says anything that seems like it could lead into a date, invite her out. If not, get her number (at the high point of the conversation, not right before you say goodbye) and ask her out the next day.

Not at all! The next time you see her, run up to her and ask her how her day is going (by run I simply mean approached in a friendly way). Chat her up and ask her what she does in her free time. Reply back with an improvised similar hobby that you do and tell her that her and you (or even a group) should go out and do that thing. If you don't have a similar hobby, pretend that you do.
