I'm going through something similar

70% percent of our mental day is spent on the feeling side of who we are. Gotta let dat shit out. Not to mention that with how guarded and fearful many dudes are these days, I think women really appreciate rawness and men who are somewhat open. With maybe just a hint of mystery ;)

I tell people on the internet this ALL the time. I try to explain to them that being your true self is so rewarding. Caring what others think is silly. Real friends will love you for who you are. "those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind"
I wish more people would have the experiences you've had.
Regarding the emotional conversations. I'm a person who people often confide in, so it's interesting to see the other side. People often tell me what things are going wrong in their life, and I can usually give advice and words of encouragement. I always loved helping people, but I never connected it to the fact that maybe I was helping them with self-esteem and confidence as well. Great post.

But what of your "true" self is needlessly insulting, foul mouthed, seemingly uneducated, and too quite for his own good?
How can you be comfortable doing all those things, knowing how off putting it is?

This is a silly question because the vast majority of people are NOT that. If you believe that is that case there are underlying problems bigger than self-esteem or fear of judgement. Most people who would be like that wouldn't be afraid to be that way anyway.

Could we get some examples of when sedditers have talked about how they feel?

Disagree with "being yourself". If you aren't happy with yourself, and not happy with who you are, CHANGE YOURSELF. You can be "TRUE" to yourself, but you do not have to be who you are today if you don't want to.
Usually when I say to "be yourself" I mean to be 500% yourself.
Are you a shy guy who loves pokemon? Then be an OUTSPOKEN guy who loves pokemon. (Note: shy =/= introverted, outspoken=/= extroverted)
