Honestly mate, I would say that if you really want the best for her then don’t pursue a romantic relationship with her just yet. It seems like she’s in a tough boat right now and she needs a friend right now who understands her and support her rather than a lover. You said that you understand what she’s going through so I would say be there for her when she needs someone to talk to or feeling a bit emotional/sad. In the future when she’s feeling better, she’ll then realize the positive emotional support that you gave to her during her rough time and she’ll see that as a great attribute and that’s when you can pursue a relationship. Well first off - ALWAYS assume that it's on. Never put yourself in the friend zone. instead, take action immediately and act through your intentions. It's fine to be there for her, but be very weary of falling into the trap of being the person that she vents to but doesn't sleep with. She has girlfriends and chode men for that.

It's probably not too late, but you need to take action IMMEDIATELY if you want to push this towards dating. Don't be the shoulder that she cries on unless you want to just be friends. She can always cry on your shoulder and vent to you once you guys are romantically involved. Trust and comfort is good, but you can't let attraction fizzle out and let her consider you simply a friend. It sounds like you want to date her.

You're not "taking advantage" or being "inhumane" by trying to date her. You're not doing some evil thing by trying to pursue her and even by trying to sleep with her. Women like sex - it's an outlet for them too and something that makes them feel wanted and connected and good. People go through shit, and they make their own choices, and it sounds like you've waited long enough to take action - the worse case is that she will reject you and friendzone you. Which it sounds like you're open to being friends anyway, so why not go for it? Being intimate could be an outlet for her and actually help her. If she is sending red flags that she is totally crazy and having serious mental health issues, then don't go for it, but if she is a relatively normal girl that is just going through a very tough time, don't let that stop you. Take her out, give her a bit of fun to take her mind off the problems, and help her move past these issues she's going through.

The only thing that waiting any longer is going to do is to cement your position in the friend zone and give her the chance to meet another guy who is more exciting and who WILL actually take action and go after her.
