You don't want to be an asshole or a nice guy. You want to be a GOOD guy.

The difference between a good guy and a nice guy is this. A good guy still has good intentions towards women, respects them, etc. but does NOT ALLOW HIMSELF TO BE MANIPULATED/CONTROLLED. A good guy's happiness and confidence comes from within himself, not from the events occuring around him. A good guy does not desperately seek a woman's affections with excessive attention and gifts, he instead is confident enough to let the woman want him for HIM.

The idea that girls like assholes is a myth. Girls like guys who are confident and comfortable enough in themselves that they don't dissolve into emotional wrecks at a girl's beck and call.

Don't aspire to be an asshole, okay? The world has enough, and it's not a very fulfilling way to be. That said, we all need to step out of our comfort zones once in a while. At younger ages, sometimes that means being edgier than we're used to. So when you act like a jerk, you're really looking at two things: her reaction to your behavior, and yours. Do you feel guilty now? Confident? Insecure? Assertive? Does she smile or frown when she gives you attention? Find out what she thinks of you through the grapvine, or read up on body language and try to figure it out yourself. Or, increase your sample size and try it on other girls.

Remember, you don't want to be a nice guy OR an asshole. You want to find a combination of what works and what feels authentic to you. So if you're going to roll with the assholes for a while, make it a learning experience. Find out what aspects about it make you a better person, and get rid of the rest.

edit Oh, and dude: don't analyze everything as much as this. I'm only suggesting it in this case because I think it requires a little more consideration.

You want to be neither. Just be yourself but confident, humorous, sexual, and fearless. Most likely, you're a pretty interesting guy; embrace it and work on the inner game.

Well, I am going to drop some cold hard truth here, and that is that you'll probably have an easier time reaching success as a douchebag. There is a reason as to why one guy gets one hottie and then cheats on her with three other hotties. The bad boy thing works. The question shouldn't be - "Which do I reach most success with?", but rather "Which type of PUA, and therefor which type of person, do I aspire to be?"
