Smile genuinely, strong eye contact, stand tall with shoulders back, be actually interested in the person (or group) you open. What you say doesn't matter, it is how you say it.

Have you ever been "opened" yourself? Use the same line, doesn't matter if it was guy or girl. If it worked on you, it will work on anyone else.

I usually limit myself to something like "Hi, do you mind if I join you?". Very simple and genuine, that is all you need. If you spend time thinking of some cool openers, you will never approach anyone. Just go out there and say whatever pops into your head.

Don't look online for openers. Take a second where ever you are approaching to look for the openers. Instead of finding that generic cheesy thing that everyone else is using, make up your own generic cheesy thing according to the situation!

"Hey this is a nice bar, what kind of wood do you think this is?"

"Man, did you guys see that guy over there ask that girl if she has a mirror in her pocket? Hilarious!"

"That's a really cool neck brace you have there! What happened?"

If you need to, take a moment to actually soak in your current environment and make a witty observation, and if they missed it, share the experience with them.

I was driving over here and I saw something in the road. I stopped to check it out, and saw some bright colored feathers scattered everywhere.

Then I saw a baby bird.

Yeah, right? Anyway, I didn't know what to do because I know if you touch it, the mother won't take it back.

But I couldn't just leave it there.

So I picked it up and stuck it in my pocket?

(looks of shock)
