Have a good set of pictures of you in different environments.

Something witty/funny and short as your profile caption, mention height if above 6'0.

Yeah, it boosts new profiles. 8 matches is decent. I get probably 20ish a week. I'm average looking. The best thing to do is to optimize your pictures for tinder. Size them correctly, bring them into photoshop or gimp and color correct them. Make them pop, get the right aspect ratio, etc.

Next is the kind of photos. Have the pictures describe your life. What are you into, what do you do, what is your personality like. Describe your life.

Admittedly, I don't get nearly as many matches (or haven't up until recently) I generally have always been selective of who I swipe on and realized I was probably screening too much so said fuck it and literally right swiped yesterday until I ran out and ended up with quite a few decent matches I might have otherwise passed up on.

As for your profile, pretty much all of the other comments have nailed it when it comes to pictures. The idea is you're painting a visual representation of yourself via images with a decent bio to kinda fill the spaces. Have a friend take some good shots of you, include some of you doing activities/hobbies you love, and try to get some full profile shots as so your match can get a good idea of what you look like over all (not just your face)

As for openers, honestly, that's the easiest part imo. Generally, I'm a pretty funny guy so I always try to line up a funny opener; one of my more recent go to's has been "Do you happen to be born in the month of November?" Usually I get a "No, why?" and follow up with "Oh good, that's the month that most serial killers are born. Just covering my bases" Generally gets a pretty positive response that shows I'm funny and not taking things too seriously/relaxed.

If that's not your thing, just look at their pictures/bio and find something to ask them about. Matched a pretty cute chick last night who mentioned she played guitar and liked to try and guess people's astrological sign. Opted for the later, and ended up having a good 45 min conversation. Got her number and set a date up this morning for Saturday.
