Of course side by side is better for intimacy, but you have to have real good rapport before you sit down. Most people face each other by habit. Try and lead them to sit next to you, or maybe pick a booth so you can slowly scootch over.

I like to be across from them, then as the date progresses toward attraction move beside them.

For example, say you've had dinner and the ice is thoroughly broken, order a dessert. Once it arrives move beside her and enjoy the sweetness and extra bit of intimacy.

On a first date I go somewhere I can get something to eat or drink on the go. Then I get them to walk around, which allows for easy kino. The when we finish walking sit down you have the rapport to sit next to them. Although, some girls are against the idea of walking around so it throws a wrench in my plans.
