I'm in a similar situation... The tip i specifically need is how do i keep the conversation from dying? I.e. what do you try to talk about in general when there's nothing to talk about? small talk.

I have done a thing where I give her a choice, say like hey I was thinking about getting dinner would you like A or B. This is a open ended question and will get a convo going it also lets her feel like you are interested in her input.
