Hey guys. Ok so here is what went down the other night and it has left me somewhat confused.

I went to a gig with some friends in a local bar. So, we are hanging out in the smoking area having a few before the gig started and a group of my friend's work colleagues show up so we shuffled around our seating arrangements.

So, we all start getting acquainted and chatting about the topics of the day. I started telling a story that I have as a bit of a conversation starter a because I realise only one or two people know each other and I hate tension...sooo boom! Break that ice so everyone can just start to relax.

Anyway, over the next half an hour the group gradually disperses to get places near the front for the gig, leaving myself and this girl (who is at least 10 years older than me) alone. We were simply talking and enjoying ourselves, neither of us knew the band and weren't overly pushed to see them. Under other circumstances I may have been interested in more than just having a casual chat but this was fine and it was nice to have an intellectual conversation with a real human.

Her friend returned soon thereafter and then it began. Dirty looks followed by pointedly evasive eye contact, no interest in joining in the conversation even being given several opportunities from both myself and the girl I was talking to etc. (I'm sure you know this routine).

After a few minutes of this I was unsettled and I thought to myself, "I'm not trying to close on your friend, we were just talking. I don't have to sit here and feel this uncomfortable". I excused myself and went upstairs to the gig. The girl I was talking to said it was nice to meet me and they'd catch up to us upstairs in a few.

We chatted a small bit more during and after the gig. The negativity friend meanwhile had begun scoring in a corner with one of my friends. The two groups split as the pub closed and we all went our respective ways.

Now, my questions are as follows:

Who is being the asshole in this situation?

(a) If it was me then, what should I have done differently? Is it not ok for a guy and a girl to just chat?

(b) If it was her friend, why did she have to get so hostile?

(c) If you think it was something else please elaborate.
