Since you're talking about day game I usually start with a compliment based on something they are wearing or how they look. I try to show a decent amount of intent with the opener, something like "I just have to say I love your look, you look beautiful today." and then I follow up with a cold read like "You must work in fashion" or "You must be from XXX city". If she is interested enough, she will often engage in the conversation. From there we can let the conversation flow naturally or I often like to steer it toward who we are and what our passions in life are.
If you can get a woman to share her life passion and goal with you early on, it's a great way to build attraction and comfort. She will feel like she knows you a lot more than she does. This will make getting dates and phone numbers much more solid.

I think the fact that you put so much weight on an opening statement is much of the problem tbh, coz sth ive realized is openers dont really count for much, like how many relationships d'you ever hear the girl being asked how they met and she quotes exactly what the guy said verbatim.
Plus, I think the girl always responds more to your general vibe and not what you're saying. Ive opened with the weather and it went well, opened with just hi(mindblowing right) and it worked, and also with complex stories (I don't reccommend), like just dont go and open your heart with a first statement like, "I just wanted to say hi to you coz you set my soul on fire, I've always had a thing for you"... these only work if you are totally joking when saying them

But keep it fun and light, thats always gonna give an edge

There is no guarantee against awkwardness, and there are far worse things than awkwardness. Just get over it, and if an interaction is too awkward, just eject and have some abundance mentality.
