It's the way you show that you're into someone without directly telling them. It's important because you can get an idea if they're into you too while building their attraction to you at the same time.

How I see flirting is just enjoying the other person's company and not being afraid to show it. For example, I was talking to a coworker at one time, and every day I'd come in and nudge her on the shoulder, say hi, talk to her, just little things that built up over time.

The important thing here is to show it, but not over-do it. The whole idea behind a "flirtationship" is that you and the other person aren't in too deep, but there's definitely a connection, and you both aren't afraid to show it.

Flirting also needs to be somewhat genuine; it needs to reflect who you are as a person to the person you're trying to impress!

It's a way to draw the action out of someone else what you are too cowardly to do yourself. Point being, if you're into someone, just tell them.
