Don't worry about it man, just go back to the well. As for preventing this happening again, here are my tips to maximize your erectofectiveness. Some combination of them may help next time. I used to have pretty bad "stage fright" the first few times I would be with a woman, but I got over it through practice.

the biggest erection killer during a first time is adrenaline. Make sure you are as relaxed as you can be. If you're not feeling really relaxed, start with a mutual massage.
pay attention to your breathing, keep your breaths long, slow, deep, this helps in relaxation.
make sure you are very well hydrated, drink lots of water before and during the date.
make sure you are well-rested, being tired makes you bad in bed.
a couple drinks can help, a lot of drinks can be boner suicide.
take a multi-vitamin before the date. The B family helps.
avoid any caffeine.
don't smoke a lot of cigarettes.
if you smoke MJ, a small amount right before you hop in the sack can help, but I don't recommend smoking MJ on a first date.
don't whack it or watch porn for at least a few days before your date.

You just keep going. Keep learning. Keep fucking up.. well, keep learning from your fuck ups. I think one of the quickest way is to look at most of this stuff objectively like you're trying to understand a new skill (which essentially you are) and please laugh at yourself when you make a bonehead move. Not getting discouraged is a huge part of this.
