Why do users downvote field reports? I cannot understand what need there is for that. If anyone can inform me....

They're all becoming the same and too rudimentary. A guy goes out for the first time and approaches a set or two and writes about it. That's awesome, but we don't need 133,394 of those. There's not that much to be extracted from those that isn't already in the sidebar.

Field Reports exist to give value to the community, not the poster of the FR.

Upvotes / Downvotes exist to bring the highest value content to the frontpage of the subreddit.

If a FR is posted that doesn't bring value via tips, entertainment, etc, then it gets downvoted to keep it from appearing in the sub.

This is exactly how reddit is suppose to work.

Reddit "fuzzes" the vote counts. http://www.reddit.com/wiki/faq#wiki_how_is_a_submission.27s_score_determined.3F

Even if they didn't though, a few dozen downvotes out of 133,400 readers is not really anything to get stressed over.

FRs are sort of a tradition that goes back to the olden days of Usenet and asf. Even the term "Field Report" originated back then. FRs may be more of an anachronism now, especially since reddit is more mainstream than Usenet. The FRs I recall seeing tended to be more like diaries by more active PUAs, rather than early FRs by guys who are astonished at their first attempts. Just as an example, google for "jlaix chess club" for some infamous FRs that became the basis for a book by Jeffy at RSD.

FRs have some inherent problems. Some FRs are ludicrous, and sedditors are naturally skeptical. As a mod, I've seen implausible FRs that I am absolutely convinced are fabricated, so we delete them. But more marginal cases that we suspect are a bit fake, we can't really remove them all. Sometimes sedditors act through comments or anonymous voting, and surely many guys are skeptical of even real successes. Sometimes it seems too easy. Well, that's one reason we post FRs, to show it can be easy, and to encourage others.

Also FRs tend to be overly dramatic. We've had highly rated FRs that were obviously done by professional writers. There is nothing inherently wrong with that, but they can draw attention for the wrong reasons. My own FRs were like that, and I am a professional writer and journalist. I tended to spend a lot of effort creating a cohesive narrative and a story arc across multiple FRs. At some point, I decided I was playing up to the audience too much, spending too much effort trying to be entertaining. It is not a good idea to become a Dancing Monkey in writing. So I definitely scaled back on the entertainment value. FRs are supposed to have educational value.

We've had many long discussions about the value of FRs and how they work in the community. I often say that the best FRs are failures, since they can have more educational value. My own FRs are mostly failures. I tend to observe how I did not use the seduction principles where I could have, and try to make corrective actions for more success and consistency.

It is really hard to write good FRs and most guys are not professional writers, some aren't even that fluent in English. But we all can learn something from FRs, even the worst of the embarrassing noob ones should be educational for the most advanced PUAs. If nothing else, we may look back and think, I was like that once and look how far I have come.
